About KVPY

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is an ongoing National Program of Fellowship in Basic Sciences, initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to attract exceptionally highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and research careers in science.

The objective of the program is to identify students with talent and aptitude for research; help them realize their academic potential; encourage them to take up research careers in Science, and ensure the growth of the best scientific minds for research and development in the country.

The advertisement for the KVPY Fellowship appears in all the national dailies normally on Technology Day (May 11) and the Second Sunday of July every year.

Selection of the students is made from those studying in XI standard to 1st year of any undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences namely B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology having an aptitude for scientific research. Special groups / Committees are set up at IISc to screen the applications and conduct an aptitude test at various centers in the country. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure. For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude tests and interview marks are considered.
Generous fellowships are provided up to the pre-Ph.D. level to the selected KVPY Fellows.

All the KVPY Fellows are hereby encouraged to subscribe to a popular science magazine to keep abreast of the scientific developments. The magazine will cover various important topics of science subjects published by the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore. Interested KVPY Fellows can get a subscription via a DD for Rs. 300/- drawn in favor of the Circulation Manager, Indian Academy of Science, payable at Bangalore, and the same may be forwarded to the Circulation Manager, Circulation Department (Resonance), Indian Academy of Sciences, C.V. Raman Avenue, PB No. 80005, Bangalore – 560 080, website: www.ias.ac.in and by giving exact mailing address for receiving the science journal.

The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up a research career in Science. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue careers in research.

KVPY SA/SB/SX 2021 - All you need to crack KVPY!

This program aims to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grants are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and set up a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation. A core committee looks after both the day-to-day and academic aspects of the KVPY Program.

KVPY Previous Year Paper Analysis

To crack the KVPY 2021, the major key is to revise the basic topics from the NCERT books thoroughly. The SA stream of the KVPY exam was considered to be time-consuming, moderate, and tricky. The Mathematics and Physics section was easier compared to the Chemistry section.

Important Topics in Chemistry: There are 14 questions in this section and most of these questions are moderate enough. The most repetitive or the dominating topics of this stream were the mole concept, physical chemistry(Class X), and organic chemistry(class XII).

Important Topics in Physics: The physics section also has 14 questions to its name and all the questions in this section were found to be very easy and direct. Most questions were from the topics of optics and mechanics in this section.

Important Topics in Mathematics: 25% of the total weightage of the examination is held by Mathematics. It has 13 questions and all the questions are very easy. Coordinate Geometry and Straight Line are the most important topics in this section.

KVPY SA/SB/SX 2021 - All you need to crack KVPY!

SB/SX stream KVPY examination has a similar pattern and preparation strategy. Last year’s SB/SX stream KVPY paper has been reviewed below. The level of SB/SX stream KVPY examination was between the level of easy and moderate. The Mathematics paper was considered to be the most difficult paper in the whole section of the exam. Both Physics and Chemistry papers were easy whereas the Biology paper was moderate.

Important Topics in Mathematics - The mathematics paper was the most difficult one and it had 19 difficult questions to its name. The most dominating topics in this paper were Calculus (Differential and Integral), Definite Integration, and Binomial Theorem.

Important Topics in Biology - The biology paper was moderately difficult in nature and all 32 questions were of the same level. Biomolecules and molecular genetics were the topics from which most questions appeared in the examination.

Important Topics in Physics - The Physics paper had 21 questions and all the questions were very easy to score. Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and optics were the most important topics from which most questions appeared.

Important Topics in Chemistry - The Chemistry section was found to be very easy in the examination. There were 18 questions and all were very easy to answer. Most of the questions appeared from topics such as Inorganic Chemistry (Class XII), Organic Chemistry (Class XII), and Physical Chemistry (Class XI).

KVPY Best Books

There is a list given below in which the best books to refer to for preparation for the KVPY examination are given. The syllabus in these books is the same as the KVPY’s latest syllabus. All these books are very handy as it features all the essential things that are required for preparing the examinations at its best.

The subject and the name of the book is listed below:

  • Physics - Fundamentals of Physics by David Hally and Concepts of Physics by DC Pandey.

  • Chemistry - NCERT Physical and Organic Chemistry by OP Tandon and Modern ABC of Chemistry by Modern Publishers

  • Mathematics - NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 and Mathematics for Class 11 by RD Sharma.

  • Biology - Elementary Biology by Trueman and NCERT Books class 11 and Class 12.
Selection Procedure of KVPY
To select good candidates, the KVPY selection process follows a two-round process which are:

Interview

Aptitude Test: In the KVPY aptitude test, the candidates are tested on reasoning and analytical abilities. Candidates should attempt any three sections in Part I and any two sections of Part II for the SB/SX stream. Candidates who are successfully able to meet the eligibility criteria for various streams will then be called for the aptitude test which is usually conducted in both Hindi and English language. The KVPY aptitude examination will be conducted at different centers all across the country.

Interview: The candidates who have successfully completed the aptitude test will be able to attend the interview round. In the interview round, the candidate’s knowledge of science and research is monitored. The shortlisted candidates are allocated a venue for the interview which is as per the KVPY test center.
