Organic Chemistry is a textbook that helps students in gaining a logical understanding of important concepts. It provides explanations on a vast variety of topics such as organic structure, the structure of molecules, elimination reactions, stereochemistry, conformational analysis, etc.

The book also explains various reactions and compounds for students. It makes use of clear diagrams of chemical structures in order to facilitate an easier understanding. Each concept is explained with sufficient evidence and reveals why certain compounds have certain reactions and how these reactions occur.

Organic Chemistry helps students dispel any misconceptions that they may have about the subject, and also provides tips on how to avoid common mistakes. It explains the principles of the subject in a student-friendly manner. This second edition provides students numerous online resources for further study and reference.

Questions and problems for each chapter help students in practically applying what they had already learned in theory. The chapters also contain boxes and margin notes which highlight key points about a particular concept. This paperback version was published by Oxford University Press in 2012.

Key Features:

  • The book contains updated material missing from the previous edition.
  • The chapters have been rewritten and revised, with more emphasis on sound understating.
  • This edition has cut down on clutter and taken out unnecessary details.

Review

It is a credit to the authors that a textbook that I have adored for so many years has undergone such a substantial overhaul and yet still retains the features that made it quite so attractive to students in the first place. This is a book that will continue to inspire students of organic chemistry for many years to come. Even if you already have the first edition, I am happy to recommend that you invest in this new version you will not be disappointed. (John Hayward, in Chemistry World, December 2012)

Review from previous edition This is a book we have all been waiting for! It is based on sound mechanistic reasoning and contains thousands of useful examples for teaching. Its style is approachable and covers both fundamental and more advanced material. (Adam Nelson, Lecturer, University of Leeds)

Review from the previous edition Represents a milestone in the field of organic chemistry textbooks... This is the first organic textbook that could be used in some shape or form on almost every organic chemistry course in any UK undergraduate program... I soon expect to be hearing "You can look it up in Clayden" ringing from lectures and tutorials, and for many years to come. (Andrew Boa in The Times Higher Education, 2001)

About the Author

Nick Greeves is a senior lecturer. He has been appointed at the University of Liverpool, as Director of Teaching and Learning, for the chemistry department. He completed his Ph.D. from Cambridge and even earned a Research Fellowship. He was also given a Harkness Fellowship at Stanford and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Stuart Warren earned a Ph.D. from Cambridge and went on to join Harvard for further research. He then became a teaching fellow. Prior to his retirement in 2006, he taught at Cambridge's Chemistry department, for over three decades. He has co-authored Solutions Manual To Accompany Organic Chemistry and Organic Synthesis: Strategy And Control

Jonathan Clayden is an organic chemistry professor. He teaches at the University of Manchester. His research revolves around molecular constructions with defined shapes. After completing a degree in Natural Sciences, he pursued a Ph.D. from Cambridge. He has co-authored Organolithiums: Selectivity for Synthesis, Volume 23.
